Expanding a Powerful Community Resource

West Side Market is a centralized and transportation accessible anchor of the Cleveland Community. Our visitors represent significant economic and geographic diversity.

Increasing Access to Fresh, Healthy Foods

1 in 4 Cuyahoga County residents, and 1 in 2 Cleveland residents live in areas that lack access to healthy food. The Market helps bridge this gap by serving as an accessible site for fresh, healthy food for individuals of all walks of life. All eligible merchants are required to accept SNAP, and the Market is Ohio’s largest produce redemption site for TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) eligible families.

Advancing Nutrition Education

The creation of a teaching kitchen and educational program space allows the Market to develop food and nutrition education programming to increase our area’s overall wellness. These programs can reach all audiences from school-age students to adults.

Growing Entrepreneurship & Workforce Development Opportunities

Small business entrepreneurship has been the economic heartbeat of the Market for more than a century. The Market can accelerate entrepreneurship by partnering with local small business assistance providers to place new or prospective merchants into the right training environment where they will garner special business skills.

Cultivating Mentorships

The Market has a rich history of owners passing skills like baking and butchery to employees through apprenticeship models. With some long-time business owners likely to retire soon, the Market will initiate a workforce development program that creates a pathway to Market skills and business ownership education.
